Baby Driver
A Movie Review
With La La Land being my favorite movie I’ve seen this year, so far, Baby Driver is definitely in second place. Edgar Wright is known for quick-witted comedic action movies like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, but he really makes a hit movie with Baby Driver.
This movie was packed with fast-paced, highly charged, big budget action, and it’s very entertaining to watch. Baby Driver also has very fitted humor that goes along with the scenes and the plot. I love the gag they use often in the film where they have the other robbers question Baby and how he’s very quiet and always listens to music. Hilarious. I also enjoyed the chases in the film, whether if they were with cars, or on-foot, they were exhilarating.
I love how this movie also seemed to get a theme or sub-plot of romance between Baby and Debora, played by Eiza Gonzalez. It flows with everything that’s happening in the film and shows a different side to Baby. I also think that the romance was needed, so Baby had more disadvantages with the villains in the movie.
The dialogue was super quick-witted and clever. Most noticeably when Baby is talking to Debora, or when Baby argues with one of the criminals, the dialogue is humorous and sticks to the characters and their personalities.
Baby Driver has a star-studded cast that includes Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Fox. They all do such a great job acting in this movie.
Ansel Elgort plays the main character, Baby. Baby is a charming and mysterious young getaway driver that has a permanent ring in his ears from a car accident when he was a kid. Ansel Elgort plays this role perfectly. He’s slick, cool, and really makes Baby a character you can sympathize with.
Kevin Spacey plays the boss of Baby in this movie. Spacey is cold, and unforgiving as Doc, and you really hate him in this movie. But, even though you hate him, you also can’t blame him for what he does. He forced and blackmailed Baby into doing more jobs for him in the movie, but Baby is such a great driver, so why wouldn’t he want him for jobs so badly. Doc also goes pretty easy on Baby, considering what Baby does, which shows a nice side to his character. Kevin Spacey did a great job playing Doc and I’m not surprised by it.
Jon Hamm plays Buddy in this movie, and Buddy is a very unpredictable character. He is funny, and a bit crazy. But Jon Hamm fits this role pretty nicely, and brings a gangster look and feel the character of Buddy.
Jamie Fox was better in this movie than I thought he was going to be. He turned out to be more aggressive, scary, and villainous than I anticipated. His character, Bats, is always against or argumentative with Baby in the movie. So, he comes off as a villain, but he has a swagger to him that’s nice for the role.
There were very few flaws with this movie. The only things bad about it were the ending and the way the last 20 minutes of the film seemed to go on and on. The ending was fair, I thought, but it was also a little off-putting and didn’t need all that it had. I’m going to go over it more in the spoilers below the movie grade.
Baby Driver is a movie that everyone should see if they’re able to, and I’d recommend it to anyone that loves action-comedies that have a great plot and cast.
Movie Grade: 8.5/10
SPOILERS BELOW
Okay, so I love the fact that the ending wasn’t cliche and didn’t end with Baby and Debora driving off into the horizon without any consequences. But, it’s a little weird that they had to show Baby go to jail, show him in jail, then show him get out. It was a little much. Edgar Wright could’ve had the last shot be Baby in jail, giving a smirk, then had a door close to black the screen and start the credits. But no, the ending had to show everything that happened to Baby up until he gets released from jail to go live happily ever after with Debora. The ending is satisfying, but it’s just a little much.
Also, I LOVE how Jamie Fox’s character dies in the movie, because he really was quite the evil guy in the movie. He killed a lot, and he was always nagging on Baby and harassing him. The fact that Baby got to kill him makes it even better.
