Big Fish Theory Review

An Album by Vince Staples

Big Fish Theory is Vince Staples’ best album to date.  He hasn’t made an album that has stood out to me like this one did.  This album is very experimental and futuristic, and he seems to be doing things on this album that no other rappers are doing.

The production on this album is crazy cool, and very experimental.  Some of the beats sound electronic and aren’t your usual boom-bap or trap beats.  Vince’s rapping and the instrumentals on this album definitely go hand in hand.  Producers like Zack Sekoff, Ray Brady, Jimmy Edgar, GTA, Justin Vernon, and Flume are on this album, which explains the different kinds of beats that are used.

Vince Staples is at his best lyrically, and performance-wise on Big Fish Theory.  His hooks are very catchy and go well with each song, and he is personal, socially aware, and even political in his verses throughout the album.  The fact that he talks about so many different things on this record explain how I related to songs pretty easily.  Some songs on the album are bangers that you could jam to any day, like the songs Big Fish, 745, Yeah Right, and BagBak.  There are also some smoother songs on the album like Love Can Be, Samo, and Rain Come Down.

My favorite songs on the album are Big Fish, 745, Yeah Right, and Samo.  Big Fish sounds like something you would listen to on a night out with friends, or even if you’re in a self-loathing good mood.  745 is a very catchy song that guys can relate to pretty easily, since Vince talks about love and romance on this track.  Yeah Right is a hype song that features Kendrick Lamar, and Kendrick Lamar can make any song sound amazing.  This is definitely one of the best songs on the album and the bass-boosted beat, versatility and dynamic structure of the song will make you love it, too.  Samo has an amazing instrumental and a great hook by Vince that will surely make you bop your head.

Big Fish Theory is another album in Hip Hop that even people who don’t like rap can like.  It’s full of electronic production, catchy hooks, powerful flow and it also has great features from Kendrick Lamar, Juicy J, Ty Dolla Sign, Ray J, and A$AP Rocky.  I would definitely recommend that people listen to this album.

Album Grade: 9/10
