Still Striving Review
An Album by A$AP Ferg
Still Striving is the third studio album that A$AP Ferg has produced, and he isn’t getting any better. His flows and style are still the same, and he is still rapping over the same kinds of beats.
Compared to his last album, this is definitely better work of his, but I don’t think he’ll ever be able to make an album like Trap Lord. He has better features and is less annoying, but the suppression of all his faults still doesn’t make up for his inability to be lyrically versatile.
Ferg’s performance usually can make up for his lyrics, like on the songs Trap and a Dream and Rubber Band Man. His linguistics and ability to be full of energy really help him make songs that are fun to listen to, and I try not to take him too seriously but I do need to critique his work for how it is to me.
I like who Ferg chose to work with on this album. Meek Mill, Cam’ron, Dave East, Famous Dex, Playboi Carti, Migos, A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, and Snoop Dogg were all great features to have on this album. The best ones to me were Dave East, Busta Rhymes, Migos, and Rick Ross since they sound a lot better with A$AP Ferg since they have the same intensity as him.
The production on this album saved most of the songs. All the producers, besides Kirk Knight, are new to me, but damn did they make some great beats. I love how most of these beats are very fit for Ferg. The only real bad ones were the beats for Nasty (Who Dat), and Tango. My favorite beats were the ones on the songs Rubber Band Man, Coach Cartier, Mad Man (this beat is the best one), Mattress REMIX, and East Coast REMIX.
There really isn’t one good hook on this album at all. They are all very sloppily done, they sound very amature and stupid. The fact that he thought these hooks sound good makes me realize how his last album sounded so bad. I get that this album isn’t meant to be lyrically amazing, and is meant for parties or working out, but damn he can do better.
Like I said before, the lyrics on this album are pretty generic and aren’t all that good. He can’t seem to write about anything other than money, women, jewelry, and drugs, which is a problem most rappers have today. I think rappers like Ferg need to have ghost writers in order to have good lyrics.
Still Striving is disappointing, but it isn’t terrible. I didn’t have a horrible time listening to it, and I would listen to it to get hyped up. It’s your average A-List trap album, it’s nothing special.
Album Grade: 6/10
