Mura Masa Review

An Album by Mura Masa

I’ve been loving Mura Masa’s music this past year.  He’s been making music that sounds like his past work, even though he hasn’t made a lot of music before this album, but it’s still new and innovative.  He’s at his best on this album, and he brought some amazing artists onto this project.

There are a couple different kinds of songs on this album.  Some songs are chill and generally sound pretty soothing and light.  Then there are songs that sound like they are definitely made for a party.

Chill songs on this album include the songs Messy Love, What If I Go? featuring Bonzai, Firefly featuring NAO, helpline featuring Tom Tripp, Second 2 None featuring Christine and The Queens, Who Is It Gonna B featuring A.K. Paul, and Blue featuring Damon Albarn.

Party songs on this album include the songs Nuggets featuring Bonzai, Love$ick featuring A$AP Rocky, 1 Night featuring Charlie XCX, All Around the World featuring Desiigner, and NOTHING ELSE! featuring Jamie Lidell.

Mura Masa is great at making both chill and party songs, he has a wide range of musical talent that really does help him work with a wide range of artists.  He works with people associated with rap, pop, and alternative music.  Mura Masa seems to be able to incorporate a lot of tastes of music on here, which can help him gain future popularity.

The production on this album is extremely diverse.  He uses harps, guitar, bass, different kinds of drums, and a ton of samples to create a universal sound on this album.  He can make a song sound tropical like on Messy Love, Love$ick, or 1 Night.  But he can also make a song sound extremely relaxing and raw like on the songs helpline, Second 2 None, and Blu.  My favorite instrumentals on this album would have to be the ones used on Love$ick, 1 Night, All Around the World, What If I Go?, helpline, and Blu.

Although this album is very close to be absolutely flawless and amazing, it isn’t.  There are some songs on here that aren’t as good as the others, and turn out to be decent rather than fantastic.  The song 1 Night is a little bit too simple to be a great Mura Masa song, not because of the pop elements, but because of the lyrics and flow.  I wasn’t a fan of Desiigner’s singing that much on All Around the World, it wasn’t bad but he really didn’t need to sing.  Second 2 None was a little bit boring and a little too slow for me.  The production was a bit lackluster on this track, too.

Mura Masa made a very good debut album.  It honestly surprised me on how great it was, he knows what he’s doing when he makes music.  He also knows what artists to work with, and has a great ear for production and talent.  His music sounds like no other artist I know, and that makes him even more special and unique.

Album Grade: 7.5/10
